Piers Morgan has sparked a mixed reaction after announcing he had interviewed Baby Reindeer's 'real life' Martha in her first television interview. The woman who allegedly inspired stalker 'Martha' in Richard Gadd's Netflix series agreed to chat to Piers, 59, to "set the record straight" following the show creator's version of events.

Announcing the news on his official platform X page on Wednesday, Piers shared a picture of him and his guest in the TalkTV studio alongside the caption: "The real-life Martha from Baby Reindeer breaks cover and gives me her first TV interview about the smash hit Netflix show." He added of his guest, who we have chosen not to name: "[She] wants to have her say & ‘set the record straight.’ Is she a psycho stalker?"

After making the announcement, many social media users expressed their thoughts about whether or not it was the right decision. One wrote: "This is unacceptable and exploitative. Re-traumatising Richard Gadd by giving his abuser and stalker a voice is a new low, even for you Piers. She needs medical help not a platform! Come on, where's the humanity?"

Another typed: "Only you would re-traumatise a male victim because he dared speak out against harassment and abuse. Well done Piers, a new low I see." A third added: "This is irresponsible."

Others had different views, with a fourth adding: "It must have happened, but can't remember looking forward to a TV interview as much as this one." A fifth typed: "I think it will be one of your most viewed interviews on uncensored, if not the most."

A sixth was all for the idea of the 'real life' Martha telling her story, writing: "I'm so glad someone’s looking into her side of the story, as we need all sides to decide for ourselves."

Piers is yet to address backlash surrounding the interview so far, but has issued a one-word response about what fans can expect from it.

Quizzed on if the chat had already happened and how he would describe how he went, he replied: "Yes, I taped it yesterday. One word? Compelling."

After filming the interview, his guest took to social media to brand Piers "a bully" and "a twerp" and accused him of being manipulative.

She has also since claimed she was "set up" to "confess her love" for Richard, which she denies is true.

Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for Piers for comment.

Baby Reindeer is inspired by Richard's experience with a stalker and the toll it took on his overall life after she harassed him relentlessly.

In the series, he plays a fictionalised version of himself named Donny Dunn who meets Martha (played by Jessica Gunning) at a pub he worked at.

After Martha tells him she can't afford a drink, he offers her a cup of tea on the house out of good will.

While he believed it was a one-off act of kindness, Martha then became obsessed and sent him 41,000 emails and 350 hours of voicemails.

With the drama now on screens, Richard has urged viewers not to try and find out who the real people are from the show and went to great lengths to protect the privacy of those behind the narrative.

Issuing a statement on Instagram, he wrote: "Hi everyone. People I love, have worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly getting caught up in speculation. Please don’t speculate on who the real life people could be. That’s not the point of our show. Lots of love."

He is yet to comment on Piers' interview, set to be aired tonight on the TalkTV's YouTube Channel at 8pm.
