Four plants to ‘ward off’ spiders from entering your home - they ‘dislike’ them
Spider mating season typically lasts until the end of October which means many people will still be seeing the eight-legged creatures in their homes. An expert has shared which plants may be "spider-repellent" as well as other tips to keep them away.
Spiders: Expert advises on using essential oils as repellents
There are many species of spiders in the UK, with common ones including the cellar spider or a giant house spider.
They are harmless but can often terrify homeowners due to their size and how quickly they can move.
To keep them out of the home this spider season, an expert has shared some top tips to follow.
Sam Jenkinson, Tiger’s garden building expert, explained: “Spiders dislike the smell of peppermint, citrus, and vinegar. You can use these natural repellents to deter spiders from your living spaces and outdoor garden buildings.
“To make a peppermint spray, mix 10 to 15 drops of peppermint essential oil with water in a spray bottle.
“Spray the mixture around your home, paying special attention to windowsills, doorways, and other areas where spiders might enter.
“You can also rub citrus peels or place cotton balls dipped in vinegar around your home for a similar effect.”
Other scents which can be used include orange, lime, cedar wood and tea tree oil.
Essential oils can be picked up from various supermarkets as well as online websites such as Amazon.

As well as essential oils, there are also certain plants which can be placed around the house or garden to keep spiders away.
The expert said: “There are a number of plants that spiders dislike, such as peppermint, lavender, basil, and citronella.
“Plant these around your garden to ward off any spiders from both your garden buildings and the home itself.”
Spiders strongly dislike these plants due to their strong scents which could will help to keep them away.
The garden expert continued: “Spiders are attracted to firewood for many different reasons, they can use it for shelter and often build webs and lay eggs in it.
“Firewood also attracts other insects which provide spiders with a food source. Store your firewood in a place where you want to avoid running into a creepy crawly.
“Also, spiders are attracted to clutter and debris, so it's important to keep your home clean and tidy. Regularly vacuum and dust and get rid of any unnecessary clutter.”
This will discourage the creatures from hiding in the home or point out areas where they are living such as behind sofas and wardrobes.
