"Sometimes they would dress four times a day over the festive period, they would get up and dressed for breakfast, then change to go out shooting or for a walk, then come home and change for tea and then change again for dinner, which was always black tie at Sandringham. They love the house party atmosphere which has never changed."
The former royal butler added that Queen Elizabeth would take the dogs out during her speech, while King Charles is said to put on a "traditional" activity for all the royals.
He explained: "In the hallway, there is a table with a wooden jigsaw puzzle which everyone has a go at over the period.
"It's very homely with a huge log fire and they all thoroughly enjoy it. I think the King enjoys the tradition and familiarity."
