A man has been appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a 71-year-old woman was attacked in Worcester on Sunday. Anthony Roberts, 56, has been remanded in custody charged with attempted murder and sexual assault after the woman suffered multiple stab wounds in Worcester.
Roberts, wearing a grey round-necked sweatshirt, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address during an eight-minute hearing at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court.
There was no application for bail and Roberts, who gave his address as Amber Heights, Green Hill, Worcester, was remanded to appear at the city's Crown Court on June 5.
West Mercia Police have said the victim, who was attacked near the River Severn in the early hours of Sunday, remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Speaking yesterday, Chief Inspector Brian Gibbs said the attack was being treated as an "isolated incident" with "no further risk to the wider public" and that extra patrols would be deployed in the area to offer reassurance to the local community.
Chf Insp Gibbs added: "We understand the impact the concerning nature of this incident has had on the local community and want to let those visiting the city centre this evening know the steps we’re taking to help make them feel safer.
"The mobile police station will be situated in the area with officers there to speak to members of the public.
"Extra officers will also be carrying out patrols in and around the river path which will continue throughout the rest of the weekend."
