A wife has taken to social media to vent about her father-in-law who, while having dinner with her, made a comment that suggested she was not pretty enough.

A woman has taken to social media to vent about her father-in-law, who implied she was too ugly for his son.

Posting on the popular Reddit forum #AITA, the troubled wife said that she, along with her husband, was invited to a family dinner by her in-laws, which she says was going fine until her father-in-law started talking about his son's “player” phase in school.

She said that during the conversation, her mother-in-law said when talking about her son that she “never imagined he would settle down” and her father-in-law added that he didn't think he would either, especially with someone “like” her.

Mortified, she shot up and went straight to the bathroom, and shortly after her husband knocked on the bathroom door to tell her that they were leaving, but it did not stop there.

Almost unbelievably, her parents-in-law messaged her husband and said that their reaction and subsequent exit was “childish” and “disrespectful” and they would not be inviting her again until she apologised to his parents.

She said: “My mother-in-law was just jokingly being like ‘Honestly, him in High school, I’d never thought he’d actually settle down with somebody’ and my father-in-law was like ‘Yeah, even less with someone like you’.”

“I asked him what he meant by that and both my mother-in-law and husband were like ‘Please, no’ in an ‘Oh he’s gonna f*** up" way.”

She added: "My husband tried to make him stop after that but my father-in-law added 'Not saying you weren’t pretty enough or anything like that, you just wouldn’t have caught his eyes'."

"I got up from the table and went to the bathroom. I was not even in there for five minutes when my husband knocked and told me we were leaving.”

“Once we were home, my husband received a text from his mom saying that my reaction was childish and disrespectful and that we wouldn’t be invited again until I apologized. My husband replied that I’d only apologise if my father-in-law apologised first. He didn’t get an answer.”

And now, even her sister-in-law has chimed in to ask her to apologise as not to cause friction in the family.

She said: “His sister texted me that I needed to apologise ASAP because I was putting my husband’s relationship with his parents at risk over a misunderstanding.”

Her post was inundated with over 1,000 replies, and most of them were championing her husband for defending her against his own family's behaviour, while also critiquing the way she was treated.

One person commented: “It sounds like your husband has your back, which he should. I wouldn’t want to go back to my parent’s house if they treated my wife like that.

“Your father-in-law is playing the victim, don’t let them twist this like that, call him and tell him you want to apologise for bringing out the worst in him, and then tell him to f*** off.”

While another said: “Seriously. I would've definitely said some s*** back that would've been a lot worse than her leaving the table lol, and I still wouldn't apologise”
