A heartbreaking water rescue has ended in tragedy when a baby boy died after being pulled from a loch.

The incident unravelled at Loch Broom in Ullapool Harbour, in the Scottish Highlands, on Monday afternoon. The baby and an adult were rescued - with only the adult surviving.

The tot had been rushed to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by air ambulance as part of efforts to save him.

The adult did not need any medical intervention.

Coastguards from Ullpool, Achiltibuie and Inverness scrambled to the scene, with Stornoway coastguard helicopter and RNLI Lochinver's lifeboat dispatched to Shore Street, where the incident happened.

It's also reported that harbour staff stepped in to help.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told the local press:"Around 1.20pm on Monday, October 16, 2023, we were called to a report of a person in the water at Ullapool Harbour, Shore Street in Ullapool.

"Emergency services attended and one adult and a baby boy were rescued from the harbour. The baby was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by air ambulance.

"An investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances. However, the death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course."
