China is set to maintain its status as a staunch ally of Russia despite mounting tensions with the West and increasingly strict economic sanctions.

Alfredo Montufar-Helu, head of the China Center for Economics and Business at The Conference Board, said the two nations will continue to enjoy diplomatic ties regardless of the repercussions.

This comes amid Russia and China's increasingly strained relations between Western powers, particularly the US and its allies.

Earlier this week, Joe Biden announced sanctions on Chinese businesses who helped Russian counterparts circumvent previous economic penalties for the war in Ukraine.

Despite this, Montufar-Helu doesn't believe their alliance will waiver any time soon, even in the face of tighter economic sanctions for both nations.

He told Daily Express US: "I don’t think we will see a deterioration of Sino-Russian relations.

"While the Kremlin might not be happy about what is happening, the fact is that China has remained their strongest political and commercial partner despite pressures from the West."

The economic ties between Beijing and Moscow have strengthened significantly in recent years, with cross-border trade and investment playing a pivotal role in solidifying their relationship.

Montufar-Helu also suggested that beyond economic interests, the Chinese government values its partnership with Russia for strategic reasons.

He explained: "Cross-border trade and investment aside, I think the Chinese Government also values its relationship with Russia because it is provides some degree of strategic support against a backdrop of escalating tensions with Western nations."

There has also been a growing alignment between Russia and China on various global issues, including opposition to Western-led initiatives and a shared vision for a multipolar world order.

Despite facing increasing scrutiny and pressure from Western powers over issues such as alleged human rights abuses, territorial disputes, and cybersecurity concerns, both Beijing and Moscow have demonstrated a commitment to deepening their political, economic, and military cooperation.
