Andy Murray to help out Cameron Norrie ahead of Wimbledon after accepting offer

Cameron Norrie has opened up on the “simple” process of getting Andy Murray to partner up with him in doubles. The British pair will play together for the first time on home soil at Queen’s. And the world No 13 said it was him who offered Murray an invitation to get some extra matches in.

Norrie got off to a winning start at Queen’s as he defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4 7-6(5) in his opening match. It means the British No 1 has already exceeded his run from 12 months ago when he crashed out to Grigor Dimitrov in the opening round.

The 27-year-old is hoping to have a strong grass season after reaching his maiden Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon last year and has enlisted some special help in his quest. Norrie will be playing doubles with Murray at Queen’s in an effort to get more time on the surface and pick the brains of the two-time Wimbledon champion.

Asked how their partnership came about, Norrie said he was the one who reached out. “I just asked him, saying, Do you want to play doubles at Queen's? He said, Yeah, let's do it. It was pretty simple,” he said.

The pair are expected to play their first match together on Wednesday, and Norrie still isn’t sure who is going to be calling the shots when they team up. He added: “I think we will leave it to whoever is serving, who is going to call the serves.

“I'm just going to enjoy it and get another match on the grass and hopefully just pick his brains on a few things. Obviously he's got a lot of confidence at the moment, a good guy to play with.”

But Norrie won’t be adding doubles to his schedule full-time and doesn’t want to overplay before SW19, all but ruling out an appearance in Eastbourne next week. “I will play here and there,” he said of his decision to enter both the singles and doubles draws at Queen’s.
