The beautiful corner of Spain bidding for £2.9m to stop tourists ignoring it
While Mallorca is flooded with tourists every summer, one region of the island gets less attention than most others and is looking to do something about it.
A region in one of Spain's most popular holiday islands is bidding for almost £3m of funding to attract more tourists to the area as well as improving the lives of local residents. Felanitx on Mallorca has applied for EU support for nine projects, according to local reports.
This could see the region, in the south east of the island, be given as much as £2.9million of funding to "revive large parts of the tourist infrastructure".
Mayor Catalina Soler hopes the funding from the Next Generation Fund, which is designed to help parts of Europe recover after the impact of Covid on the economy, will also benefit the local community "in their everyday lives".
There are plans to build an auditorium, with Brussels funding £89,000 of the costs. Funding for a number of other projects has been applied for, including transforming an abandoned building on a hilltop in the region.
There are also plans to build a viewing platform next to the lighthouse in the resort of Portocolom, at a cost of £108,000.
One of the most expensive projects planned by officials is to build a new roof for the indoor swimming pool in the town of Felantix itself. According to the community, this will make the facility suitable for inernational sporting events.
This would take £853,000 out of the EU fund. There are also plans to set up a sailing school and restore a historic excursion boat.
The total cost for this will be £494,000. The region is home to 18,000 residents.
It is known for its wine vineyards that attract thousands of tourists each year. While the main town of Felantix is a few miles away from the coast, the region of the same name covers some of the island's east coast.
Parts of the region are more rural than other busier areas of Mallorca which see far higher tourist numbers. Tourism nonetheless remains one of the most important industries for the area.
The region is also known for growing capers which are a popular ingredient found in plenty of local dishes on the island.
